Psychotherapy

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy aims to help people to better manage difficult feelings and relationships. It offers an opportunity to explore and reflect on such difficulties with a therapist in a confidential space.  It’s a process that allows a person to come to a fuller understanding of their abilities, difficulties, motivations or worries.  It differs from counselling in that psychotherapy is a longer-term process that can last for several months or years depending on the individual needs of the person.

What issues or problems can psychotherapy help?

Psychotherapy might be more helpful for psychological problems that have built up over years than at a time of crisis or distress.  This is debated extensively within the profession.  However, it has been my experience that psychotherapy is not limited to specific problems or issues.  Both couples and individuals use short-term counselling to talk about issues such as abuse, anxiety, bereavement/loss, body image, depression, disability, domestic abuse, eating problems, family issues, gender issues, identity, life transitions, personal development, relationships, self-harm, sexual orientation, sexual problems, stress, youth issues, and other general counselling issues.

How many sessions?

There is no limit to the number of sessions you can have.  We always review the progress being made and can re-contract for further sessions if both of us think this would be useful.  Some people decide to enter into medium- or long-term psychotherapy after doing some short-term work.

How much does it cost?

Each session will last for 50 minutes.  The cost is £35 per session for individuals or £50 per session for couples.
