Short-Term Counselling

What is short-term counselling?

Short-Term Counselling is anything between 1-12 sessions where the focus is on helping you to find solutions or new approaches to overcoming present difficulties or problems.

Most people who come for short-term counselling have 6 sessions.  The model of therapy I use for short-term work is often called ‘Brief Solution-Focused Therapy’.  This means that we focus on what you want to achieve rather than on the problems that made you seek help.  We do not explore the past in the same way we would if you were engaged in longer-term therapy.  Instead, we focus on the present and your future.

What issues or problems can short-term work help with?

Short-term counselling or therapy is not limited to specific issues or problems.  Both couples and individuals use short-term counselling to talk about issues such as:

  • abuse
  • anxiety
  • bereavement/loss
  • body image
  • depression
  • disability
  • domestic abuse
  • eating problems
  • family issues
  • gender issues
  • identity
  • life transitions
  • personal development
  • relationships
  • self-harm
  • sexual orientation
  • sexual problems
  • stress
  • youth issues
  • other general counselling issues

How many sessions?

Generally most people have between 4-6 sessions.  We always review the progress being made and can re-contract for further sessions if both of us think this would be useful.  Some people decide to enter into medium- or long-term psychotherapy after doing some short-term work.

How much does it cost?

Each session will last for 50 minutes.  The cost is £35 per session for individuals or £50 per session for couples.

Where does counselling take place?

I work in several locations throughout Northern Ireland – please contact me for more information.
